If you are confused about the name of the Preschool, you might be interested in some history. Back in the spring of 1981, Children of The Woodlands opened its doors as an outreach of The Woodlands Methodist Church. The school grew, and the name was expanded to Children of The Woodlands Methodist Weekday School. The preschool started with only three- and four-year-olds, but over the years added toddlers, twos and later Transition and Kindergarten.
But the big change came when first grade was added. While the originators of the preschool never imagined it, there was soon a demand for second grade, and the school board had to consider how far the school might grow. Once there was third grade, “Children of The Woodlands” did not quite fit. Ten years ago, the name changed to The Woodlands Methodist School.
Fast forward to 2020. After graduating two classes of eighth graders and establishing a strong Lower/Middle school, the school board realized that making proper plans and the best decisions for children ages 18 months through the eighth grade was difficult. Since the Preschool is in the main church building and the Lower/ Middle school is in a separate building, it made sense to everyone to create two separate operating entities.
The timing of the operational changes coincided with the Preschool’s 40th anniversary. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring back the name that was well known in the community: Children of The Woodlands. The Woodlands Methodist School took advantage of the timing and is changing the name of its Lower School to Elementary School beginning in Fall 2021.
In summary, Children of The Woodlands is back! And The Woodlands Methodist School continues to thrive, offering Elementary School PreK – 4th grade, and the Middle School for grades 5 – 8.
